How to Use Pee Pads for Effective House Training
Here's a step-by-step guide for using pee pads for effective house training.
Choose a Specific Location
First, you'll want to choose a place inside the home for your dog to use the potty. Bare floors are easiest to clean up after any leaks or accidents. You can start with a more confined area.
It's best not to put the puppy pads around the dog's bedding or food bowls, as you want them to know that this space is for using the bathroom only.
Choose the Right Pee Pads
The next step is to decide which pee pads will work best for you and your pet. You can choose to use disposable or reusable pads.
Introduce the Dog to the Pee Pads
Introduce your dog to the puppy pee pads. It would be best if you came up with a word or phrase that lets them know you want them to use this spot for their elimination. You can say something like "potty" or "bathroom," and make sure you repeat your phrase every time.
Use Positive Reinforcement
You'll want to reward your dog when they use the bathroom on the pads. You can give them treats or offer them another form of praise, like cuddling or petting. Make sure that you do this as soon as you see that they have used the pad.
Be Consistent
Having a routine with your dog is essential, which means feeding them at the same time each day, too. Remember that some puppies and dogs may catch on fast, and others may take weeks to get it down.
Accept that accidents will happen, practice your routine daily, and make sure that you always give them rewards and praise for using the pads correctly.
Reduce the Size or Number of Pee Pads
Once your pup gets better at using the pads, you can start decreasing the number or size of the pads. This may be a slow process, but eventually, they can use just one pee pad to go to the bathroom.
Transition Outside (If Needed)
Once your dog uses the pee pads consistently, you can transition them outdoors. Follow the following steps:
Slowly start moving the puppy pad closer to the door.
After they use the pad, take it outside, put it on the grass, and say the bathroom command.
Once your pet uses the potty outside, give them a treat or praise.
At some point, you can remove the dog pee pad altogether.
